The Travel Rule in the UAE

How the Travel Rule applies to virtual asset transfers in the UAE, what originator and beneficiary data is required, and how unhosted wallets are handled.

Short answer

The Travel Rule requires originator and beneficiary information to accompany virtual asset transfers. In the UAE it applies to transfers at or above AED 3,500. VASPs exchange this data with the counterparty provider and apply additional checks where the counterparty is an unhosted wallet.

What data must be sent?

Originator and beneficiary identifying information, such as names and account or wallet identifiers, as set out in the applicable rulebook.

What about unhosted wallets?

When the counterparty is a self-custodied wallet, there is no provider to exchange data with, so the VASP collects the information directly and applies risk-based checks.
